Sixth Grade Curriculum
Catechism: Students learn the basics of what we believe using the Faith Foundations curriculum. In 6th grade we focus on the three parts of the Apostles’ Creed and the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.
Religion: Students use the Christ Light Curriculum for the New Testament. We follow the life and teachings of Jesus up to his death, resurrection, and ascension.
Memory Work: Students receive a monthly list of Memory Work passages that correlate with the Christ Light lessons we learn that month.
Geography: Students learn about Western World Geography from our curriculum which presents materials and activities in a variety of ways. Students also learn through map work, projects, and presentations. The text was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company 2019.
Spanish: Students explore this second language through individualized lessons. They learn greetings, day of the week, months of the year, colors, numbers, classroom vocabulary, and common phrases. They do this by following along with a Rosetta Stone online curriculum.
Spelling: Students no longer take weekly Spelling tests. Instead, we use the Spelling Connections curriculum to study words and use them in sentences and language correctly.
English Language Arts: Our students develop their reading and essay writing skills using Lucy Calkins curriculum. We also study forensics, speech, and grammar. This is done through teacher discretion and online curricula.
Science: Our students explore the workings of God’s creation by studying Earth Science. We use the McDougall Litell curriculum.
Math: Our students deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts through smaller, easily assimilated increments that are spread according to their skill level. We use Big Ideas curriculum.
Art: Our students learn about all mediums of art. Throughout the year they use different mediums to create artwork from a culture, topic, emotion, etc.. They learn about our world through art and its use in ours and other cultures.
Music: Our students learn both secular and religious songs and put into practice some of the fundamentals of music as they learn to play handbells.
Physical Education: Our students learn skills for different sports and physical activities that promote a healthy life. A few of our units include volleyball, dancing, track and field, aerobics and more. In conjunction with these things, students learn sportsmanship, teamwork, and the benefits of physical activity.
