Holy Cross News and Updates- September 9, 2020
A Prayer for the Times
Be with our country Lord, in these times of deep unrest. Please bring an end to violence, destruction and killing. Lord, teach us to “love our neighbor as ourselves” and teach us that our neighbor includes everyone, even those we strongly disagree with.
Forgive us, for our many sins where we have failed our neighbor in thought, word or deed, especially where we have begrudged another Your compassion and love. Strengthen Your Church, O Lord, that it may be a beacon of joyous unity in the Gospel and a light of blessed forgiveness and grace, calling all to repentance and to trust in Jesus as the only Savior from sin.

Thoroughly Lutheran 2020
Dr. Arthur Eggert (WELS) will be teaching a class this fall based on his book: 'Clearing a Path for the Gospel: A Lutheran Approach to Apologetics' The book presents the information required to defend our faith. In order to respond to attacks on our religious beliefs, we need to understand exactly what we do believe. We also need to recognize the fallacies in our opponent’s arguments.
The 90 minute classes will be held at:
- Following the Lesson Video, parents will be encouraged to complete a simple activity related to the lesson with their child and to reinforce the Memory Treasure.
This class will be 19 sessions, from September through February

The Center for Apologetics and Worldview Studies
- Eastside Lutheran in Madison on Sunday evenings beginning at 6:30 or
- Peace Lutheran in Sun Prairie on Thursday evenings beginning at 7:00
Following a 2019 synod resolution authorizing the establishment of an apologetics center, the ELS Apologetics Committee appointed Dr. Ryan MacPherson of Bethany Lutheran College to serve a two-year term as director. Dr. MacPherson will continue to teach with a reduced load at the college while leading the center in sponsoring conferences, producing publication, and partnering with synod boards for outreach and evangelism. The launching of the apologetics center has been made possible by an anonymous initial $20,000 gift, as well a a follow-up challenge donation of $10,000 year for a two year period. We are pleased to say that this calendar year’s challenge was fully met. For video archives of a prior conferences and plans for coming events, visit www.blc.edu/apologetics.
The Cross-Stitch Corner
Due to the Corona Virus “hanging around,” it looks like there will be few if any mission rallies this year.
The work does not go away, and so each one of us will need to consider how we can help with the work
of Cross-stitch. Being isolated does not make hunger and the needs for the Gospel’s message go away.
Cross-stitch hopes to be able to continue to fill these needs:
1. “Food for Fuel” the program to help meet the nutritional needs of the orphans in our
Indian orphanages: $20,000
2. Provide funding for our “jungle schools” in Peru, so that the children can continue
coming to our schools and having their lunch provided: $5,000
3. Help Karim Yaghlegi and his newly started Arabic mission efforts: $5,000
4. Education is the key to lifting women out of poverty. To this end, we help in the
Lutheran Mission of Salvation – India with scholarship money for women: $5,000
Might you as an individual or your church working together pick something from the 2020 Cross-stitch
project list as something that you could support. Due to the Corona Virus “hanging around,” it looks
like there will be few if any mission rallies this year. The work does not go away, and so each one of us will need to consider how we can help with the work of Cross-stitch.
Please consider sending a donation at the time your circuit would normally be having its rally to:
